Chinese robotic firm MagicLab has made a significant splash in the robotics world by recently releasing a video showcasing their humanoid robot, MagicBot, running non-stop for four minutes outdoors. This follows a demonstration where the company exhibited MagicBot’s improved walking mechanics, displaying a more human-like, straight-legged gait. Reports suggest that the robot is preparing for an upcoming half marathon in Beijing, where bipedal robots will race alongside 12,000 human participants.

In December 2024, MagicLab deployed humanoid robots for job training in a factory setting, where a video captured MagicBots handling a variety of tasks such as inspection, material handling, picking and placing, scanning, and warehousing.

Next-gen humanoid

Established in December 2023, MagicLab, also known as Magic Atom Robotics Technology, aims to revolutionize industries such as search and rescue, logistics, and manufacturing through the deployment of advanced humanoid robots. The company’s third-generation MagicBot humanoid robot, equipped with full-scenario environmental sensing capabilities, navigates complex environments effortlessly. It utilizes LiDAR, head and waist RGBD cameras, three fisheye cameras, and ultrasonic sensors to collect environmental data for navigation.

MagicLab has developed a navigation system that allows its robots to adapt to difficult terrain and changing circumstances. Featuring a 42-degree-of-freedom design and a total carrying capacity of 88 pounds (40 kilograms), MagicBot has arms capable of lifting up to 44 pounds (20 kilograms). The robot boasts a battery life of up to 5 hours during continuous walking and other operational activities.

The company claims that thanks to its motion control network, MagicBot can self-learn and improve its walking posture. The robots can easily navigate uneven terrain due to their robust anti-interference and anti-shock properties. It is suitable for a variety of industrial and operational scenarios due to its high task precision achieved through 6D visual servo technology and full-body imitation learning.

Showcases precision

Earlier demonstrations revealed the remotely controlled MagicBot demonstrating remarkable dexterity in precisely folding baby clothing, placing them in a basket, and even skewering and cooking marshmallows. The robot displayed its precision by dancing to upbeat music, watering a plant gently, and performing a magic trick that turned an egg into a ball, showcasing its ability to handle small objects and perform complex tasks with ease.

These features enhance hand dexterity through the use of advanced micro high-torque servo actuators and multi-dimensional pressure sensors. The developers emphasize that six miniature servo actuators enable precise object manipulation and ensure responsive control. The robotic hand is adept at handling a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, including soft, slick, or flexible objects. According to the company, with sub-millimeter positioning accuracy and the ability to handle several pounds, MagicBot’s hands set a new standard for fine motor control in robotics.
